We are delighted to invite you to the upcoming CSPS SPECS ‘BEING PELOPONNESIAN’ webinar, featuring Dr Aphrodite Vlachou and her talk on “Honouring Hyakinthos and Apollo at Amykles: Bronze dedications and the early phase of cult and ritual”.
Summary: The Sanctuary of Apollo Amyklaios, located on the low hill of Agia Kyriaki on the west bank of the Eurotas River, is one of Sparta’s most significant and enduring sanctuaries, with continuous cultic activity from the Mycenaean to Roman periods. Material assemblages, and particularly the pottery deposits from the sanctuary area, indicate that Early Iron Age ritual activity maintained a hypaethral character, centred on communal drinking and dining. Excavations at the site reveal that bronze objects formed a substantial part of the votive assemblage, providing valuable evidence of ritual practices, social interactions, and wealth accumulation, and reflecting broader patterns in early Greek sanctuaries.
Items of personal adornment, tripod cauldrons, and figurines and statuettes date back to the 9th century BC. Jewellery, especially finger and hair rings, constitutes the largest category of bronzes and shows strong affinities with finds from contemporary religious and funerary contexts. Their prevalence suggests that such objects played a distinctive role in rituals and also offer important knowledge of local production and consumption networks. The motivations behind these dedications might range from individual acts to communal gift-giving.
There is also strong evidence of a connection with women’s ritual activity, particularly during the Hyakinthia festival. Since 2018, renewed excavations by the Amykles Research Project have yielded critical evidence about the sanctuary’s architectural development and ritual life, especially in its southern sector. The significant number of bronze artefacts found further reaffirms their central role in cultic activity and attests to the increasing participation of worshippers and the regular performance of rituals at Amykles.

Dr Aphrodite Vlachou earned her degree in History and Archaeology from the University of Thessaly (Volos) and pursued Museum Studies at the University of Athens. She completed her PhD at the University of Thessaly in 2019, with her dissertation focusing on the Geometric and Early Archaic sanctuaries of the Peloponnese. During her doctoral studies, she received scholarships from the Foundation for Education and European Culture (IPEP) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). She has held postdoctoral research positions at the Ionian University (2019-2021) and the University of Münster (2024).
Her fieldwork experience includes archaeological projects in Oropos (Attica), Magnesia, and the Cyclades (Kythnos). As an archaeologist with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Laconia, she conducted excavations at the acropolis and agora of ancient Sparta. Since 2020, she has served as a scientific collaborator for the Amykles Research Project, which oversees the systematic excavation of the sanctuary of Apollo Amyklaios on Agia Kyriaki hill, south of Sparta. From 2022 to 2024, she participated in the project “Archaeological-Geophysical Prospection at the Sanctuary of Apollo Amyklaios near Sparta,” supported by the State Scholarships Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service. Recently, she was selected as an Early Career Fellow for the 2026-2027 academic year at Harvard University’s Centre for Hellenic Studies (CHS), where her research will focus on votive traditions, ritual practices, and cultural exchange in early Sparta, with particular emphasis on the Amyklaion bronzes.
The BEING PELOPONNESIAN Webinar Series is organised and hosted by the Chair and managing Committee of the new Sparta and Peloponnese Early Career Scholars Global Network (CSPS SPECS) under the auspices of the CSPS at the University of Nottingham. The network was launched in December 2025.
