The new series of online lectures “AGIDO” on the study of women in Sparta and the Peloponnese from prehistory to Roman times
We are pleased to announce the new Centre for Spartan & Peloponnesian Studies (CSPS) AGIDO / ΑΓΗΔΩ webinar series at the University of Nottingham (UoN). The new webinar series focuses on the history, archaeology, and reception of the women of Sparta and the Peloponnese from prehistory to the Roman period. It celebrates the CSPS’s 20th anniversary and aims to serve as a global networking initiative to facilitate intergenerational connections among scholars of different career stages working in the field and as a tool for community outreach and public engagement.
The series is organised and hosted by Abigail (Abbie) Costello (PhD researcher, CSPS), assisted by Thea Wolff (PhD researcher, CSPS), Catherine Viola (PhD researcher, CSPS) and Malvina Alexopoulou (MA; field archaeologist, Hellenic Ministry of Culture) on behalf of the CSPS.
The webinar series’ mentors are the world-leading expert on Spartan women, Professor Ellen Millender (Reed College), Professor Emeritus William Cavanagh (CSPS), Professor Emeritus Stephen Hodkinson (CSPS), Dr Georgios Spyropoulos (CSPS; Hellenic Ministry of Culture) and Dr Chrysanthi Gallou (CSPS Director).
The series runs with the kind support of the “Daughters of Penelope – Sparta” association. The first lecture of the series will be delivered by the world-leading expert in the study of Spartan women Professor Ellen Millender (Reed College) on The Disordered Spartan Female: Wealth, Neglect, and the Dangers of Sparta’s Private World The online talk will take place on Monday 9 March, 17:00 GMT (19:00 Athens time) via MS Teams.
